adventures in language learning
18 Sep 2024 10:22 amAfter my big push to adapt subtitle files (.srt) for favourite Thai OST to suit my current learning preferences (Thai + romanized Thai under the official MV, brain doesn't like the static romanized lyric videos these days) and all the close listening to make sure the right lines were in the right places, I realised I can now make out entire lines of this early one I hadn't been able to find romanized lyrics for. It's slow, clear and uses a lot of standard OST vocabulary so not the hardest test but an unarguable indication my ears are improving :) Using the adapted subtitles has been helpful but the biggest benefit was from making and checking them. Must continue this.
Trying to get them written down from the video is slow-going and I thought to make another go at finding roms. Starting with the song and singer's name in Thai wasn't useful - romanized lyric videos tend to use English for the song name and the romanized version of the singer's. (Additional complication - the series itself has two different English names, Cause You're My Boy and My Tee.) Translate gave me wrong answers but I was able to use his Thai name to find his IG, Thai wiki with recognisable acting credits and his MDL. Gun Achirawit, shortened to Gun Achi. So now I have a karaoke video with romanized lyrics :)
All this searching did lead me to other songs by Gun Achi that I like. New songs, yay. And more to learn from :)
I think I'm going to persevere with testing myself to do it on my own. The official MV has hard-coded Thai subs but I only recognise a few words and my brain is so slow to go from Thai letters to the right sounds (vowels are my nemesis). I do better working out how letters fit sounds and have more use for hearing than reading Thai so it makes sense to work in that direction. It's very tempting tocheat check my work on better romanizations as I go but I'll learn more if I can manage some portion of this on my own and keep them aside for a check after I've done what I can, however slow, and to fill in what I can't manage.
No .srt files with timings so I'll have to decide if I want to take on that task as well to make the sort of custom subtitles which are currently working best for me. That's a different sort of learning and would be useful for other things (like when I can only find separate movie raw and subs and the timings are out of sync) but it might be good to have one where I can't fall back on romanized lyrics to use for practice reading Thai. Still a ways to go to get to that though.
"In The Deepest Depths", Gun Achirawit, OST Cause You're My Boy/My Tee
A different Gun Achi song took over. I now know how to do the timings :)
And it's probably not Gun Achi but Gunachi Achirawich, at least according to the Thai on the official versions of his videos. His abandoned IG is gun_achi though so who knows.
