Just finished The Shipper (GMMTV, on their youtube channel of course) and the OST won't leave my head. It's so full of twists and turns I'm not sure how to squee about it or even recommend it without giving things away. It's goofy and intelligent, silly, over the top, ridiculous, oh my god you're not doing THAT, and heartwarming. Relevant in its messaging. EVERY emotion is magnified, sometimes through outlandishness, often through changes in the arrangement of the music, always through the acting.

The acting is pitch perfect. All of the cast gave exactly what they needed to in each moment, no more, no less. This was an early one for many of them as well, how can they be THAT good THAT young? (And Jennie. OMG. She was brilliant. Must find more outrageousness from her.) Credit to the director/screenwriter and whoever made the casting decisions for bringing this out of them. And for negotiating an over the top complicated plot that turns itself completely around every episode.

First was the obvious standout, playing both a boy and a girl's soul in a boy's body and making it work. There's a scene where she's broken-hearted but trying to pretend to her best friend that she's ok. First conveys all of that while also showing that it's Prigkhing's Pan feeling these things. At least three different things going on simultaneously and all delivered clearly. Whole new layer of appreciation for his versatility.

Ohm Pawat's skill was more subtle, which suited his character, and especially came to the fore with sadness and grief. The conversation with his parents, for the family photo over the phone, knowing what he was going to have to tell them soon.

I didn't watch because First, or because Ohm, even though they're my two favourite actors and if either have had a weak role I've not come across it yet. It was realising it was the glorious girl chaos of Prigkhing as the title role. I've adamantly disliked the way other Thai series have handled shippers and shipping culture and that coloured my expectations. So ironic given the theme of not judging a book by its cover :) But I adore Prigkhing. And it turns out The Shipper had a very different take on all of this. She was perfect for the role.

The biggest surprise, no shock would be better, was realising that it was Piploy as her best friend. I've seen her in several other series - haughty mean girl Lila, confused vengeful Namsine, bratty teen diva Jaya - and here she was, sweet loyal adorable Soda. As Lila especially her appearance was striking enough I had thought I'd recognise her anywhere. Nope :) Not at all. I feel conflicted about calling her a favourite actress for the sole reason that she's very good at playing characters who make it difficult to like them but I have a lot of respect for her skill as an actor. I read a lot of her brattiness as Jaya in 55:15 as comedy but felt unsure of that, especially with my reliance on subtitles. After seeing the humour she put into Soda though, yeah she has the skill to do that too.

First, Prigkhing, Ohm, Piploy - my four favourite actors. I really should have trusted them enough to watch this sooner.

If anyone happens to be reading this and has seen it, please say hello. I'd love to squee. And if anyone happens to be reading this and hasn't seen it, forget everything you've read here except that it's both outrageous and outrageously good, go watch it and come back to tell me what you think :)
